My Triathlon Journey: Unveiling the Science of Success

My journey in triathlon isn't about secrets or shortcuts; it's about embracing fundamental principles, structured training, and scientific precision. Each step I've taken has been guided by a commitment to excellence, devoid of any magic tricks but enriched with determination and a unique approach.

My Journey

Early Years: From Water Polo to Triathlon

My journey began in late 2018, following years of competitive Water Polo and Surf life-saving during my schooling. Familiar with swimming and maintaining fitness through running, I transitioned from CrossFit to Triathlon, drawing on the determination forged in the crucible of tough training sessions.

Racing Debut: Trials and Triumphs

In 2018, I ventured into my first 70.3 in Taupo, New Zealand, underprepared but undeterred. With guidance from my coach, Professor Grant Schofield, I crossed the finish line in 4 hours and 26 minutes., igniting a passion for triathlon. From there, I tackled my first Ironman in 2019 3 months later, refining my training and nutrition strategies, laying the groundwork for future success. I completed my first Ironman in 9 hours and 20 minutes.

Evolution and Adaptation: Achieving Personal Bests

Over the years, I've fine-tuned my training efficiency and nutritional approach, focusing on a low-carb strategy to optimise energy utilisation. The results spoke volumes, with successive Ironman races showcasing significant improvements in performance and efficiency, culminating in personal bests of 8 hours and 26 minutes in 2021 and 8 hours and 53 minutes in 2020.

Championship Success and International Endeavors

Fast forward to 2022, where I embarked on my first World Championship Ironman race. With meticulous attention to detail, I focused on perfecting every aspect of my preparation, ensuring that every 1% improvement was maximised. The experience was preceded by a remarkable achievement in 2021, where I clinched victory in the overall age group race in Utah, earning the esteemed title of 2021 Overall Age Group World Champion among a field brimming with exceptional athletes.

This triumph not only marked a crowning moment in my career but also served as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence. Breaking numerous personal bests, both in training and on race day, reinforced the effectiveness of my approach and fueled my determination to reach even greater heights.

In 2022, I had the opportunity to travel to Europe to train and compete. I had the privilege of representing New Zealand in the World ITU long course triathlon championships. Following this I travelled to Maui with fellow New Zealand training partner, Braden Currie to complete a four week training block before I attended the 2022 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

Unfortunately, in the face of cruel luck I collided with a spectator at 60km/h who stepped out in front of me whilst on my bike, two kilometres from transition. After collecting myself as best as I could and being cleared by the medical team I finished the race and recorded a time of 10:17:35 in defence of the overall age-group title.
